Do you remember the lyrics of Steffenwolfe’s Born to be Wild:
Get your motor runnin’
Head out on the highway
Lookin’ for adventure
Whatever comes our way ….
Well, that was us when we left or home town of Goulburn, NSW in November 2016. We hooked up our caravan, got the motor running on the D -Max, and headed south on Highway 31.
We really feel like we are beginning to live our retirement dream of becoming retirees enjoying travel. We are now grey nomads, living in a caravan and travelling Australia.
We have set off for an indefinite period of travel.
Some people think we are mad. And, if not mad, than a little strange. People say “Your doing what?”
Our young Doctor was interesting. She was really amazed and her response was a definite “Your doing what?”. She could only imagine staying in a hotel for a week….. It seemed travelling indefinitely, in a caravan, was beyond her experience or imagination.
But we think we are so lucky. We keep pinching ourselves, checking with each other that this is really happening. At times our dream coming true seems very surreal.
We have no definite travel plans. Having said that, we have the following immediate plans. To start off, we know we are going to Melbourne to attend a daughter’s graduation in December. Then we have accepted a very generous invitation to spend Christmas in Newcastle with family. After recovering from the Christmas and New Year celebrations we will probably head towards Brisbane to visit another daughter and her young family.
Number one on Greg’s bucket list is visiting the Kimberley Region in Western Australia. So, when the weather conditions seem right, we plan to begin heading inland.
Yet we still haven’t made up our mind which way we will travel to the Kimberley region. We love that we can make our minds up as we go. And we can change our minds. It’s a new freedom we relish.
To us, we are also rejuvenating our sense of adventure. We are keen for the adventures that will come with travel. Indeed, we hope this our travel experiences will rejuvenate every aspect of our lives.
Opportunities and challenges will definitely arise, especially when you consider the distances we plan to travel as nomads living in a caravan. Very probably the things we will remember, and hopefully laugh about, will be the things that go wrong. Having said that, we are optimistic about enjoying a great trip.
We are definitely open to whatever comes our way. We expect plans will be made and remade. Flexibility will need to be the name of the game. Overall, our fingers are crossed for amazing travel adventures as we explore this wonderful country.
We are so excited to see how our adventures pan out. Please follow us and see what we get up to as our adventure unfolds.
