Amalfi Coast – Possibly My Favourite Travel Destination So Far
John and I were in our 50’s and 60’s before visiting Europe for the first time! I know – Shock, Horror! But for various reasons we didn’t really get started on this fun part of life, travelling, until we were in our middle age, or thereabout. Now we can’t stop.
So our first venture into Europe was three weeks around Italy in 2013 and we fell in love with it. There are so many places in Italy that I love but I’ve chosen Positano and the Amalfi Coast as my favourite because I had to stop myself crying when we left (and I think John might have felt much the same). Surely that is the sign of a great holiday!
Sometimes it is hard to define what you like about a place – it certainly has to stir emotions. But Italy, and the Amalfi Coast in particular, has the lot – sunshine, history, architecture, scenery, the Mediterranean, colours, food and wine, beauty everywhere you look, culture, and of course the people and their way of life and love of life. So we will be fans forever. If they could just do something about those blasted stairs everywhere!

Kyoto, Japan – A Vibrant City For Culture, Food, And History.
Kyoto is a popular destination for both tourists and locals. As a region, it is home to at least 1600 temples and shrines, both small and large, famous and not so much. There are many imperial palaces and gardens that just beckons a visit. Besides these attractions, Kyoto is strictly rooted in formal traditions such as Kaiseki dining where multiple courses of precise dishes is served by geisha, who is a female entertainer often found in Gion-Shiji.
With Kyoto being home to so much culture, food, vibrancy and history to indulge in, I can confidently say that one cannot have too many days in that cultural city. Strolling through Gion or Pontocho to steal a glimpse of geisha, visiting the many iconic temples or experiencing a traditional ryokan stay will leave you lasting memories. No matter how much time you spend in Kyoto, saying ‘goodbye’ will always be hard and there are new experiences to look forward to. Thus, selecting the best places to top my list was a difficult task. Nevertheless, here is the suggestive ultimate guide to the Best 5 in Kyoto which you simply must not miss.

Africa – For Great Safaris And Wildlife Photography
My favourite holiday destination is Africa. I’m a keen photographer, and it cannot be surpassed for taking photographs of wild animals. It is a trouble free holiday once you arrive. You usually fly to a destination on a small plane. Your assigned guide collects you and takes you on game drives. The camps are extremely comfortable and well appointed, better than many hotels.
It may seem costly, but as with a cruise, everything is taken care of – all meals, transport, and accommodation are included. The food is equally great and your washing is done daily. The entertainment is laid on with two game drives each day, African music and dance. You make new friends and never know what you are going to see. It’s amazing to come around a corner and encounter elephants or lions in their own habitat. There is so much to learn about the natural world and the landscapes show the grandeur of this enormous land. You will fall in love with Africa as you sip sundowners while giraffes amble past, silhouetted against the unique orange sunset.
I have written many posts on our African safaris – perhaps you might like to take a look at Mala Mala Part 1 to give you an idea.

Lucca – The Hidden Gem Of Tuscany.
My favourite destination is Lucca – the hidden gem of Tuscany.
I’m drawn to Northern Italy like a moth to a flame. The history, architecture, food and wine – Lucca fits the bill for all these passions.
This medieval walled city (designed by Leonardo De Vinci no less) was a stop on tour with Back Roads Touring and our incredibly old and comfortable hotel was in the heart of Lucca.
There’s plenty of space to move around the streets, cafes, shops (of all kinds) and churches… even in the height of Italian summer. There’s even several towers to walk up for a better view of the amazing city.
The continuous medieval wall and moat (now empty) is well preserved. You can cycle around the wall and enjoy panoramic views at every stop and you’ll see both locals and visitors enjoying picnics while soaking up the Tuscan sun.
Piazza Anfiteatro, or “Amphitheatre Square”, in the city centre was our favourite haunt. The square is actually oval and a lasting memory of Roman times where gladiator shows and games were a regular occurrence. (I’m not a fan, but this was the reality of ancient times).
Surrounded by many local cafes, restaurants, and shops this is the place for a dose of people watching and lingering happy hours.
Ciao Lucca – until we meet again.

We Are In Love With Scotland And Here’s Why
Our love affair with Scotland started in 2017 oddly enough with my Outlander obsession. Yes, I wish it were more travel-esque than that, but honestly it is not.
For those not in the know, Outlander is a TV series about 18th centuary Scottish history filmed in beautiful Scotland. We decided we had to follow the Outlander Trail and see the country for ourselves.
So, we booked a ticket and the rest is history. We’ve been to Scotland 5 times, and already we are planning our next trip back.
What is it about the country we love so much? It’s pretty simple – the warm people, lush landscape, and gorgeous castles – in that order. I should add whisky for Mike, because he found a completely different “trail” than mine, his is the Scotch Trail. I think he is on a quest to sample every single bottle in Scotland.
We spend most of our time in the Scottish Highlands the more rural and less populated part of the country. The Highlands are filled with farms, rolling hills, and miles and miles of green forest with over 2,000 medieval castles scattered along the way.
Our favourite thing to do is spend the day driving the back roads and admiring the landscape and visiting castles.
We always feel welcomed in Scotland and can always count on a friendly conversation with a local wherever we go.

Perigord Region – The Jewel Of France
We love holidays in Perigord amongst the medieval towns and villages. I don’t have one favourite place, but as we love history and shopping in the local markets, so combining these two on a Sunday morning is a sheer delight. One of our favourites is the village of Issigeac, which dates back to Roman times. On Sundays this quiet village springs to life – it’s market day!
Most markets in France are rather good, but Issigeac is special. The market spreads throughout the streets, around the historic buildings throughout the village, with people selling gastronomic regional specialties, an abundance of fresh produce, clothing, arts, crafts. It also hosts many festivals and they end in October. Enjoy seeing traditional music and dancing celebrating All Saints Day. We like to sit with the locals in the park by the riverside while enjoying some tasty treats from the market sellers.
One of these Sundays we were strolling along the main street in the warm autumn sunshine, when some locals who were standing on the side of the oyster stall with glasses of wine, heard our accents. They drew us into their party. Before we knew it we were sipping white wine and enjoying succulent, fresh oysters and chatting for 20 minutes or so. In the afternoon we may head over to see Chateau Biron or perhaps to Cadouin to the caves…

Outback Australia: For Unique And Unforgettable Experiences
Where is my favourite travel destination? Now that’s such a hard question. I have multiple favourite travel destinations, with many places and countries I’d love to return to.
But, the truth is I simply love exploring Outback Australia. It has stolen my heart.
Central Australia, with Uluru, the Olgas, Kings Canyon, and the West MacDonald Ranges, is right up there for me. The colours and shapes of the landscape are breathtaking. For me, Uluru felt very spiritual! It’s hard to explain.
Oh, and Kakadu in the Top End of the Northern Territory! The abundance of well preserved ancient Aboriginal Art is incredible. Then there are the awesome sunsets from Ubirr Lookout over the flood plains; sunrise on the Yellow Billabong – with prolific bird life, beautiful water lilies, and of course crocodiles simply doing their thing in their natural habitat.
Then, there’s the Kimberley Region and Karijini National Park in Western Australia… I could go on and on. Actually, it’s anywhere in Outback Australia for me.
I think you probably get my drift. I love the great outdoors, natural beauty, the freedom of being away from everything, and exploring remote areas. If these comments resonate with you, then no doubt you will love exploring Outback Australia.
You’ll never never know, if you never never go

Hi Michele and thanks for dropping by. Some great travel choices for sure. We too are big fans of Scotland. We have visited once and we hope to revisit again next year. But, I’m not an Outlander fan. Perhaps I should give it a look, and check out the trail 🙂
Like Joycee, Northern Italy draws me back time and again. Lucca is a particularly wonderful city to visit. She’s got me craving a return.
Hi Cathy and thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. It’s so interesting to hear you back Joycee’s recommendation about Lucca. I had never really heard of Lucca.
